Day 5 Wasting Away

Activity 1: Off the menu
I think that the rule about fishing is correct because we don't get much fish when people get them.
Being charged $100,000 is a good amount because it stops people from fishing as its a lot of money.

Activity 3: Picture Perfect
It took a long time to get to the view.  I had to drive to get here and when I arrived I decided to take a selfie and when I looked into my phone I thought it looked beautiful.
Then I saw someone else doing what I was doing and I asked her how did she get here, and she got here the same way I did. I asked her how her travels have been.  I also ask where she was from. She said New York. I thought that was cool. We formed a friendship and we went around the world visiting exciting places together.

Day 3 First you 'sea' 'Me, Now You Don't...

Activity 1: Night Owls

Are you a night owl or a early riser?

My sister and brother are night owls because they are all ways talking to each other at night.

My sister is also a early riser in the morning.

My dad is a early riser because he has work to do on the farm he wakes up about 4.30 am in the morning.

My mum is a night owl because shes up until 11pm.

I'm a night owl because ive been reading books for the summer reading challenge.

Activity 2: A Local Delicacy

My favorite food of all is my mum's chocolate brownies.
The ingredients are:
Butter, Cocoa powder, eggs, caster sugar, vanilla essence and self-raising flour.

Activity 3: The midnight Zone
500kg / 25kgs = 20 adults
500kg / 15kgs = 33.33 but you can't have .33 of a child
Change to 495kg / 25kg = 19.8, can't have .8 of adult,  so will take away .8
25kgs x 19adults = 475 + 15kgs = 490
25kgs x 18adults = 450kgs
495-450 = 45, 45 / 15 = 3 children
18 adults x 25kgs each = 450, + 3 children x 15kgs = 495kgs
18 adults and 3 children.
I had to have help from mum and a calculator as I found this hard.

Day 5: Blink and You'll Miss It

Activity 1: Towering Timbers

Should logging be allowed in NZ?
Yes I think it should be allowed because, you can always plant new trees.  We need to chop them done to make power, house and paper.  Also we need wood to make a fire to keep warm.  Only chop down pine trees or trees that grow back quickly after replanting.

Activity 2: Living on the edge

Dear Dad
How are you?  I'm very good. In in the Arctic Tundra.
It is very cold here and there are barely no tress.
It's very light here. The snow is melting so there isn't much snow around.  I can basically only see water everywhere. There are high mountains in the background.  I've a seen a polar bear and a snow owl sleeping.
I'm getting bitten a lot by the mosquitoes, lucky I brought my bug spray.
The tent I'm sleeping in has some small claw marks from the owls.
Miss you Dad, I'm having a bit of a good time.
Love Johanna

Activity 3: Going, going... gone

In New Zealand there are lots of trees, rivers and a lots of houses.
I live on the West Coast, of the South Island of New Zealand.  We have two main Islands.  North and South Island, plus a little Island at the bottom called Stewart Island.  Plus lots of little Islands all over.

Where I live it is mainly trees and bush.  There are rivers and lakes.  There are couple of small towns and lots of farms.  There are cows, sheep, chickens, deer and pig farms. The ocean is not very far away from my house. There are cool rivers like this :
Me and my sister at Hokitika Gorge/River

Day 4 More than Meets the Eye

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights

5 questions that I would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.

  1.  How many days did it take to get up Mt Everest?
  2. What did you do up Mt Everest?
  3. What was your job?
  4. Are you married?
  5. how many mountains did you climb?
Activity 2: Pancakes and Maple Syrup?

My favorite food is Macaroni Cheese.
Here is my recipe. It comes from Simon Holst book - Easy on the pocket to prepare inexpensive family meals.

400-500g Macaroni pasta
3 Tbsp of Butter
3 Tbsp of Flour
1/4 tsp of nutmeg
1/2 tsp of salt
2 Cups of milk
2 Cups of grated cheese

Optional Topping
1/2 cup breadcrumbs with 2 Tbsp melted butter

Put the pasta on to cook in plenty of boiling water.  While pasta cooks, melt the butter in a medium-size pot.  Stir in the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly to avoid it browning and forming any lumps.  Add the nutmeg and salt, then begin adding the milk half a coup at a time.  Stir briskly to break up any lumps and allow the sauce to thicken and boil between each addition.  When all the milk has been added and the sauce has returned to the boil, remove it from the heat.  Add the grated cheese, stirring until the cheese has melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.  Drain the cooked pasta and stir in the sauce.  Serve as is or transfer to an ovenproof dish and sprinkle the top with the crumb mixture.  Place under a preheated grill until golden brown.  Serve and enjoy!

Activity 3: Salt and Pepper
My hotel is made of brick and glass.  The glass are the windows.
I would build my hotel at Moana at Lake Brunner. The room I would be in would have a bedroom a kitchen a dinning room and a balcony. To make it I would use a hammer  mortar and nails.

Day 3 Awesome Animals

Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts
My monster is called moca she likes eating people whenever she sees one, she has a wand and she has spikes on her. She can fly as fast as lightning, shes half cow and half cat. She always is on the hunt. What she likes the most is blood. She would smack you with her really strong tail. Don't go near her.

Activity 2: The Secretive Skink
3 Good things working as a DOC Ranger:
1. Looking after the cute animals and birds
2. Going caving
3. Knowing you are making a different to the NZ wildlife.

3 Bad things working as a DOC Ranger:
1. Getting rained on while working outdoors
2. Being bitten by animals
3. You go to some dangerous places, where big rocks could full on you

I wouldn't like to be a DOC ranger because you can get in a place that's in danger sometimes and having to clean up after people in the parks when they make a mess.

Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund
One animal the WWF is trying to save is the Saimaa ringed pubs from human disturbance, other animals and the cold. To help them they are making snow banks to protect the seal pups and to keep away other animals and human disturbance. It has made a difference but they need to came up with a long term plan.

Second Animal the WWF is trying to save are Tigers from all around the world. They trying to get rid of tiger traps and stop people from killing them they also hiding cameras  to see what they eat and to look out for bad people that kill them. I believe that this is helping them a lot.

Summer Learning Journey 2018/19

Week 1
Day 1: In the beginning
Activity 1: The legend of New Zealand

Three fun facts about New Zealand

Fact 1: New Zealand Dairy Farmers produce a lot of butter and cheese.  They produce about 100kgs of butter and 65kgs of cheese each year for each person and my mum and dad are apart of making that.

Fact 2: There is no snakes in New Zealand and I'm happy about that.

Fact 3: I'm really surprised that 30% of New Zealand is covered in forest.

Activity 2: North and South

My hometown isn't a town, its a farming community.  It's called Taramakau Settlement.  It is on the West Coast of the South Island.  Its is over 40kms from Greymouth and Hokitika.  We milk cows here every day.  When you head straight here you basically see grass and trees and some houses.  We are surrounded by mountains, and in winter time they have snow on them.  I love seeing the sunset from my bedroom window.  You can go bike riding on the road but be careful because of the milk tankers.  You have to go the same way you got here cause there is only one way.  There is a river that you can swim in, fish, go on a boat or canoeing.

Activity 3: Ice, Ice baby
