Day 3: Taking Action

Activity 1: Predator Free 2050 - A call to arms

The video I liked best was Predator Free Video #3 because how there going to kill them and how to do it.

My Idea of how to portent bird eggs
My idea is that we should make little cages for the birds and eggs. And you would have them in trees not to high up so in the morning you would have the cages open and when night comes you would have the cages closed with the bird and the eggs in it. But kiwis can't fly so you would have to a cage for them and have a little robot to keep an eye on the eggs.

Activity 2:  Protecting the Most Vulnerable - Fact or Fiction?

Fact or Fiction?

  • Māui dolphin only live up to 20 years
  • Females grow to 1.7m long and weigh up to 50 kg. Males are slightly smaller and lighter.
  • Māui dolphin are the smallest of the world's 32 dolphin species
  • Māui dolphin have distinctive red, white and black markings and a short snout.
  • They produce just one calf every 2 - 6 years, making population increase a very slow process.
  • Māui dolphins may only be able to grow their population by 3% a year. That means that a population of approximately 55 can only increase by 1 individual per year.
Activity 3: The power of ten

Top 10
  1. Amur Leopard: Because there is less than 70 left.
  2. Gorillas:  There is less Gorillas in the world then there used to be.  Their babies are cute
  3. Sea turtles: I don't know a reason but I want them to be safe
  4. Orangutan: I think they are cool, hairy and have such long arms.
  5. Sumatran Elephant: I think they are cool animals and so big as they are the only things that are that big
  6. Tiger: Because they are cool cats and they are one of my favourite cats.
  7. Dolphins: Because they are very cool and they are beautiful
  8. Blue Whale: Because they are the larges animal in the world and its incredible they are very loud and you can hear them from hundreds of miles away.
  9. Arizona Agave: Because I've seen them before and I think they are cool to look at.
  10. Black Lion Tamarin: Because they look so cute and fury.

  1. Hello Johanna,

You have come up with some really great ideas, I can tell that you have put in quite a bit of thought into it, terrific work! I love the idea of inventing a little robot to keep an eye on the eggs, it's very creative and I also think that it would be very helpful for us to keep an eye on them like that without scaring the kiwi parents. I enjoyed reading what you thought and had to say by watching the video, thank you for sharing. It's great to see you engaging with all the activities and working hard through every single one of them, awesome work Johanna!

These are some great facts about the Māui Dolphin! Well done for following instructions and giving us three true and three made-up facts about this dolphin. It will be really interesting to see what other people think are true or false. The Māui Dolphin really is quite cute, don't you think? Have you ever seen dolphins in real life before? I have never seen a Māui Dolphin in real life before but I have seen other types of dolphins in aquariums before and they are such gentle and friendly creatures! They're very intelligent too and can be trained to perform some awesome tricks!

Wow, that is a very impressive list! I can tell that you have put a lot of time and effort into this activity. It's great to see you do a bit of research about these 10 different plants and animals to support the reasons as to why you would like to save them. I think it's awesome to see you include some endangered species in your list. It's really important that we are all aware of what's going on in the world and what we can do to help them.

    Keep up the hard work,
    Evelyn :)
