week 2 day 4

Activity 1

  • *On 4th September 1939  New Zealand declare war on Germany, but the governor-general Lord Galway changed the date on the paper to say the night before so then it was the same day as Britain.
*On this day fifteen Blenheims and fourteen Wellingtons conducted a bombing raid on German warships at Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbűttel.  The German cruiser Emden was damaged but seven bombers were shot down, mostly from anti-aircraft fire but at least one by a Bf 109 of II/JG77 - the first Luftwaffe victory against the RAF.  The four-day Battle of Pszczyna was won by Germany.
*This information came from wikipedia

  • On 30th April 1945 The Adolf Hitler died.  Because there was going to be other people trying to kill him so he killed himself and his wife drank poison and died.  Hitler was evil and the evilest guy you would ever met. The war ended soon after this day.

Activity 2
Charles “Charlie” Upham.  He won two VCs.  He nearly won a third but received the Bar instead.  He did lots of brave things, like he was one brave man.  He earned the first one in Crete in 1941 and the second at  Egypt in 1942. He is the only person to have achieved this as a combat soldier.   He had grenades in his hand and threw them at the bad people all by himself, and he saved his group of men. He became a prisoner of war and he kept escaping and kept getting caught.  You can read more about him with the book of “Mark of the Lion” by Kenneth Sandford.

Bonus Activity
One day you are walking along the deck of the ship when you hear a loud bang.  You start to run as you see smoke coming from the far end of the ship.  You run towards the room where your patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor.  Just as you arrive at the door to their room you hear another loud bang and you… fall to the ground duck incase someone is here to shot us.  Then I run and tell the sailor that there is fire.  I then go check on my patients to see if they are alright.  Some of them are very scared so I cover their eyes and make sure they are ok.  The other nurses would help too.  I would look out for some bad people.  Turns out the the loud bang was the motor blowing up.  The men have to get it all fixed up.  Once it was fixed we all go back to our places in a safe place.

  1. Hi Johanna

You have found some really good information about the two events in the history of the war. It would be great if you could just out them into your own words rather than copy and pasting words from the internet.
I agree with you and Adolf Hitler was not a very nice man at all.

Sir Charles Upham was a truly great New Zealander. There is a really great book written for kids call "The soldier in the yellow socks" which is all about him. You should see if your school library has it.
Also did you know that the navy have a ship named after him HMNZS Charles Upham.

I enjoyed reading your ending to the story starter. You have a great imagination. I am really pleased that it was just a motor blowing up and the story had a happy ending and everyone was safe.

Good work Johanna, I am looking forward to your next post.

    Until next time

    Allie :)
